Poondu/Garlic Kuzhambu(Gravy)

 

Garlic is widely used in all over the world. It is a fundamental component in many or most dishes of various regions, including  Asia, Europe, Africa and America. Garlic has been used as both food and medicine in many cultures for thousands of years.
 
“Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food” written by Greek physician Hippocrates. He was called as father of Western medicine and used to prescribe garlic to treat a variety of medical conditions.

Some of the health benefits about garlic  i would like to suggest are:
  • Garlic is highly nutritious and has very few calories.
  • It is used to treat common cold and reduces blood pressure level.
  • Garlic improves cholesterol Levels, which may lower the risk of heart disease.
  • Those who affected from cholesterol can eat boiled garlic in milk daily. This will control the cholesterol level. 

 

This is a very simple Kuzhambu(gravy) even bachelors can try and keep it in a fridge for 3 days as we are not using coconut.

Ingredients:

  • Garlic Cloves –  10 -15
  • Mustard Seeds –  1/2 Tsp
  • Fenugreek Seeds –  1/4 Tsp
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli Powder – 1/2 Tsp
  • Coriander Powder – 3/4 Tsp
  • Tamarind Extract – 1 Big Ladle
  • Salt  – To taste
  • Sesame Oil, Curry Leaves – For Seasoning
 

Preparation:

  • In a kadai, heat oil and start tempering with mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, curry leaves.
  • Then add garlic cloves and saute till they change golden brown and emits a nice smell.

  • Finally add the tamarind extract and stir well and allow it to boil in medium flame till the gravy reduces to half & thickens.Once the colour changed add turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder, salt.

Serve with the best combination of white rice and appalam.

 

Note: Same kuzhambu(gravy) can be prepared by adding vegetables like Brinjal, Drumstick, Lady’s finger etc.

  3. Akka also add a powdered mixture of pepper corns,cumin seeds,oman ana fenugreek to the kolambu before adding tamarind juice. ..it wl giv u a rich taste.
